KC: Hello, I’m KC Craichy, Founder and CEO of Living Fuel, here with my friend, JD Drew. Welcome back, JD.

JD: Hey, brother.

KC: JD Drew is the right fielder for the Boston Red Sox. And we’re talking about super nutrition in baseball and in life. And in another segment, we talked about how Living Fuel worked for you in your athletics. Today, I want to turn a little bit to the family because I know it’s gone from you to Sheigh and to the kids.

JD: Right.

KC: So, how does that work?

JD: I think more than anything myself, as a career, I’ve used it. But I think as a father, the important thing is my family. I’m often on the field trying to perform, but the longevity of a baseball life is going to be 10 to 15 years at the most. I want to watch my kids grow healthy, watch my boy and girl have the benefits that I may not have had as a kid. Things have changed so much even from when I was little as far as nutrition, things that kids have available to them. As we started researching on how we were going to go through childbirth and all that stuff, my wife was on Living Fuel the whole time she was pregnant with Jack and Ella, and we were just in a situation where the best for our kids as parents, we could do for them would be great. Jack’s been on Living Fuel Greens from the time he was born really, just out of a bottle or a sippy cup and Ella is the same way. Now, they see me, and they’re drinking shakes. The thing that gets me is my son eats it in a bowl of applesauce, and I think I’ve often told you that I have no idea how he pulls this off, but we mix in about half a scoop of greens in a bowl of applesauce and he just downs it. It looked pretty good to me one day, so I thought I might try it but it didn’t quite taste …

KC: Wasn’t as good to you as it was to him.

JD: He loves it. But Sheigh is faithful in drinking it every morning. The kids, depending on what time of day it is, they’re eating bowls of applesauce with Living Fuel or shakes of Living Fuel. It’s been great.

KC: Now, my kids mix it in yogurt, and SuperBerryin yogurt is really very yummy. It’s delicious.

JD: Yeah, I tried Jack on SuperBerry, but for whatever reason he likes the Greens.

KC: He’s a real man.

JD: Yeah, he’s a real man. I guess when he was little we said, “Hey, we’re not going to give him any extra fruit. We’ll make him eat these first”, and he loves it. But yogurt is a great idea because the kids love it, and I think that would be a definite option for people that, for whatever reason Jack just loves the applesauce. I think I talked to you and said, “Hey throw it in a little bit of applesauce every now and then, and it’s just a breakfast of champions.

KC: Breakfast of champions.

JD: Not for me, but for Jack it works well.

KC: That’s awesome. You know, that’s interesting, because every taste is a learned experience other than sugar. People talk about their kids not eating their spinach and all that sort of thing, so when you start them the way you started them, you actually create a palate enjoying things that are good for them.

JD: I can see that as my kids have gotten older. I can absolutely tell that because certain things that they’ve tried the first time they’ve hated, and then they try again and it’s just that acquired taste. We started Jack with Greens early just to, we knew the benefits of that, and because of that, he still to this day will get up and we’ll say, “Hey, Jack, what do you want for dinner?” “I’ll just have applesauce and Living Fuel.” For a kid to ask that it makes me proud because I know that the nutrition that he’s getting is absolutely tremendous for him.

KC: That’s awesome. You like guacamole right?

JD: My wife eats it. My acquired taste for guacamole is not very …

KC: Hasn’t got there yet. Well, if you like guacamole, if you put green Fuel in guacamole, you cannot taste the Fuel at all.

JD: Is that right?

KC: You can actually make a whole meal out of it. It’s kind of cool.

JD: I can definitely do that, because my wife and my son will tear that stuff up.

KC: OK. Well, give that a try.

JD: Absolutely.

KC: Hello, I’m KC Craichy, Founder and CEO of Living Fuel. I’m here with my friend, JD Drew. JD, welcome back.

JD: Thank you. Good to be here.

KC: Pleasure to have you. Today, we want to know, JD, how would you describe the difference that taking Living Fuel has made for you as an athlete?

JD: The key for an athlete to play and perform well, I think, is the way his body feels when you’re out there, not necessarily always mentally but physically you’ve got to have that upper edge and that feeling of control. And I think the big key with me was early in my career I always felt a little jittery, light-headedness, the butterfly kind of feeling and Living Fuel’s really helped me to kind of level that.

KC: That’s terrific.

JD: Yeah.

KC: Well, I think some maturity and experience probably had a little to do with it.

JD: Yeah, the more time you get in, but I think that the key for me is a lot of times I did get that light-headed feeling and for whatever reason, I don’t know if it was the things that I was eating before or the shakes that I was taking before, but that was the ultimate reason in trying to find a different product. And that’s how I ended up ultimately beginning to use Living Fuel.

KC: Terrific. You know some of our athlete friends talk about how they like it because they can actually use it in-game if they had to.

JD: Absolutely.

KC: Because you don’t feel heaviness in your stomach but you feel completely satisfied.

JD: That’s the big key with a lot of the whey proteins and protein shakes that are offered at the field. I always had the upset stomach feeling, the bloated feeling and there was zero chance of me using that before the game. It was always mostly a post-game shake because the reason being is that feeling of running around out there like that. But with Living Fuel I found that, yeah, if you want to use it five minutes before the game you’re fine or even in-game you’re going to be great with it.

KC: That matters when you have rain delays of several hours and stuff like that.

JD: Yeah, the rain delays in baseball, especially in Boston, are on a nightly basis, it seems like. So, yeah, it definitely gives you that option to go in there and throw a shake together and not have to eat so heavy, trying to find snacks and keep your energy up. It’s great to have a shake.

KC: Is it true that a lot of these guys really don’t eat before a game?

JD: Most of the starters will do light snacking before the game, things like that because the whole thing is you don’t want to go out there with a real full feeling and heavy stomach. And when you’re playing the game of baseball, a lot of times you can find it easier to focus and perform well when you don’t feel so heavy and bloated.

KC: Well, you’re a high-performance athlete. It matters to you because that’s what you do. Why should it matter to the people listening out here today? Why should it matter?

JD: Nutrition, I think, is talked about on every different level. When you turn on the TV you see workout things and different foods that you can have, but I think the big key is all the research I’ve done and all the products that I’ve seen and come across in the clubhouse, nothing compares to what Living Fuel does and offers. That being said, for me I have a choice of many different options out there that I can take, but I think as far as health goes, on a daily basis I would offer it to my family, my parents, whoever it may be. Because I know the benefits of a product of that nature on a daily life even if you didn’t change your eating habits, even if you just had that for one time a day, the benefits of that.

Here’s a blast from the past – KC Craichy interviewed Boston Red Sox outfielder JD Drew the summer after he won the All-Star MVP award in 2008. JD started using LivingFuel products while he was playing for the Atlanta Braves and says it’s a big reason for his long career in major league baseball.

Here is the first part of KC’s interview with JD Drew.

KC: Hello, I’m KC Craichy, founder and CEO of Living Fuel. I have with us today JD Drew. Welcome, JD.

JD: Thank you, brother.

KC: JD Drew is right fielder for the Boston Red Sox. Having a great year, heading towards another playoff year?

JD: Yeah, if everything goes well, it’ll be perfect. We’re a half game out of first, so we’re looking forward to finishing strong.

KC: Terrific. You know, JD, I tried to think about how long we’ve known each other now and that seems like four or five years …

JD: Yeah, I think the first year, 2004, I got in contact with you guys when I was in Atlanta. So, it’s been quite a while now.

KC: It has been. It’s been great. You are now a model user, in my view, of Living Fuel because you have a career that requires you, day in and day out, tear yourself down, just work hard all the time, so recovery is key. And so, I think that the audience would be very interested to know how you use the fuel, and I think if I remember right, you use the SuperBerry Ultimate, the SuperGreens, the LivingProtein.

JD: Yeah. Well, it seems like you guys are always coming out with something different. The Ultimate started a couple of years ago, I guess, and big key for me is upkeep maintenance. When you play 162 games basically with two days off a month over an eight month period, well, I say 8 months, you got six months of full baseball. Then, you’ve got the spring training which lasts six weeks, so overall about 200 games. I wake up every morning, throw together Ultimate and Greens, a scoop of each and some apple juice and water, and I think that’s been my whole thing. My kids on the other hand like for me to throw it in the blender and grind it up and if I’m drinking it, they’re drinking it. So, it’s been great for our family.

KC: Terrific. Terrific. And what does it mean to you as an athlete? What can you tell? What difference can you tell …

JD: The big thing was seeking you guys out when I was in Atlanta in ’04. I was looking for something that gave me the energy level that I needed and an advantage to not feeling the lightheadedness before the game. Just that pick me up kind of deal without using all the sugar and things. I started searching on the Internet looking for things. Ended up running into you guy’s website. And I think that’s been the big key is just that energy level that’s flat lined to enough that I don’t feel like I’m just bouncing off the wall, but I sustain performance over a three, three and a half hour period of time. But it also helps me recover, I sleep good at night, my body didn’t feel like it breaks down. I think the big key is a lot of sports teams are using whey proteins and things that always felt bloated on the field. Just didn’t feel like my body was adapting to that stuff very well, so I was looking for something that was real. Fruits and vegetables and I could survive on it.

KC: How have you incorporated the CocoChia bars into all of that?

JD: CocoChia is one of those things where there’s always that need for pick me up during the day on the field. I got a stash of them thrown in my locker and just reach up there and grab one of those instead of going in there and finding a Snickers bar or pack of Oreos. I think that’s been the big key. We have a lot of down time in baseball before the game. We have our workouts starting around 4:00 on the field, so we get there anytime between 2:00 and 2:30, so there’s plenty of time to look around for food and junk and things like that. I think the big key for us is when you realize you’re going to have to keep your body in shape for an extended period of time to play at this level, this is my 11th year. It’s been one of those things where it’d be very easy to take advantage of all the junk food laying around the clubhouse and eat a certain way. But I felt like in ’04 I was heading in the wrong direction and needed a change, and that’s where Living Fuel kind of filled in and filled that void for me. KC: That’s terrific. Now I know you use the SuperEssentials Omega, too, how does that…

JD: I think essentially that’s been one of the biggest keys for me because of all the anti-inflammatories that are handed out freely in baseball with the wear and tear on your body. Those things have seemed to kind of lube my joints and keep me into a position where I don’t feel like I need anti- inflammatory drugs to keep me going.

KC: Terrific. Terrific. Well, JD, we appreciate you coming today and talking about your protocol, because you’re definitely an example of fit . . .

JD: Well, yeah, it’s been great. I tell you, it’s been one of those things that I appreciate what you guys do because it helps me stay out there on the field everyday.
