Tart and delicious cranberries are for much more than cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving.  These rich, red berries are a nutritional wonder that yield numerous health benefits in addition to their sheer delight to the taste buds.

Cranberries are a fun and unique berry.  Here are some unique facts about them that may surprise you:

  • The cranberry “plant” is actually a low-lying vine or creeping shrub that grows up to 8 feet long.  Cranberry plants flourish in cool, acidic, sandy blogs in cooler climates
  • Cranberries are also called “bounceberries” as ripe cranberries actually bounce!
  • Wisconsin is the #1 producer of cranberries in the United States
  • Cranberries are low in calories and sugar.  One cup of fresh cranberries contains just 50 calories
  • Cranberries are a good source of Vitamin C, Vitamin A, lutein, folate, potassium, and manganese
  • Beware of many cranberry juices labeled “cranberry juice cocktail”. These drinks are typically loaded with added sugar, and actual cranberries are a minor ingredient.
  • A very small percentage, less than 10%, of cranberries are eaten fresh—the vast majority of cranberries are canned or juiced.
  • Cranberries have long been thought to aid the body in healing urinary tract infections (UTIs), a condition that affects 50% of women sometime in their lives.  In a 2011 study, medical researchers at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska found that doses of 500 to 1,000 mg of cranberry powder per day were associated with the reduction of recurrences of UTIs by 36 and 65 percent.

Organic freeze-dried powdered cranberries are an foundational ingredient in Living Fuel’s revolutionary LivingFuel SuperBerry Ultimate andSuperBerry Original functional whole-meal superfoods.  Our select cranberries are picked at the peak of ripeness and nutrient density, and their nutritional potency is quickly locked-in by proprietary freeze-drying.

SuperBerry Ultimate contains an incredible 14,000mg per serving of our remarkable berry complex of organic wild blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and cranberries (SuperBerry Original contains 13,750mg per serving).  Like most fruits, berries are largely water, so these amounts are the equivalent of approximately 100g of whole berries per serving.  Compare these amounts to tiny fraction of berries you’ll find hidden in other “berry” products.

Enjoy cranberries along with over sixty other superfoods, vitamins, minerals, herbs, antioxidants, enzymes, prebiotics, and probiotics in a great-tasting whole meal functional superfood blend.  “Living” fuel indeed!

In the first of a four part special edition focused on cranberries, NutraIngredients looks at the market for the berry, with its entrance into the indulgence sectors an indication perhaps that health positioning is no longer the sole driving force behind the superfruit’s continued success.
