Good Fats—Unsaturated Fats (usually soft at room temperature and often called oils) are of two varieties—polyunsaturated and monounsaturated—and are found in products derived from plant sources. Polyunsaturated fats are found in high concentrations in chia seeds, flaxseeds, fish oil, and borage seed oil. Monounsaturated fats are found in high concentrations in olives, nuts, and avocados. Omega-3s and omega-6s are types of polyunsaturated fats that are essential for normal growth and may play an important role in the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease, hypertension, arthritis, cancer, and other inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. Because most of the foods people eat are high in omega-6, most people eat too much omega-6 and are deficient in omega-3s.

One of the more profound uses of omega-3 fatty acids is in the treatment of a wide range of mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, unipolar major depression, postpartum depression, schizophrenia, and attention-deficit disorder. The brain does not function well unless adequate amounts of omega-3s are circulating in the bloodstream and are incorporated into cell membranes. It appears that increases in omega-3 dietary intake raise the levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which is related to motivation and ambition, qualities often lacking in depressed people.

New research from the University of Western Australia and the University of Montpellier (France) reported in Free Radical Research in June 2010 indicates the heart health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) may actually reduce oxidative stress by reducing levels of a compound called F2-isoprostanes. Scientists report that daily supplements of four grams of either EPA or DHA for six weeks were associated with reductions of about 20 percent. Led by Dr. Emilie Mas, the authors of the study wrote, “The data suggest omega-3 fatty acids reduce oxidative stress, which is likely related, at least in part, to their anti-inflammatory actions and the expected reduction in leukocyte activity. These findings give further support for supplementation of the diet with omega-3 fatty acids for cardiovascular risk reduction.”

The bottom line is that healthy fats (most importantly, essential fatty acids) are critical to life. The body is designed to manufacture most of the fats it needs. However, there are two major classes of fats the body needs but cannot manufacture on its own; hence they must be obtained through diet alone. These fats are the essential fatty acids (EFAs).

KC and Monica Craichy demonstrate how to help children take fish oil. They are joined by Joshua and Grace Craichy.

Audio Transcription:
KC: Hello. I’m KC Craichy, Founder and CEO of Living Fuel and this is my wife, Monica, and our three year old son, Joshua. Say hello, Joshua.
Joshua: Hi.
KC: Joshua is going to demonstrate how anyone can take fish oil. A lot of people tell us, “Hey, I can’t take gel caps or I can’t swallow them or my kids can’t swallow them.” Joshua wants to show you how you take a fish oil. Josh, show them how you do it.
Monica: Just take it out of the jar. Put one in your hand. How many do you take everyday?
Joshua: Only two.
Monica: Two? All right. And what do you do with it? Just pop it in there?
Joshua: Yeah.
Monica: Let me hear it pop. I heard it.
KC: Joshua chews it like chewing gum, and the fish oil should taste like fish or it’s over-processed, the fish that it came from. It’ll have a mild fish taste for 30 seconds or a minute and you move on. But you get the wonderful benefits of having the fish oil whether you swallow the gel cap or you don’t. Sometimes, he’ll chew it like chewing gum. Sometimes, he’ll spit it out, but he’s getting his fish oil. Say bye, Joshy.
Joshua: Bye. [pause]
Grace: I take three.
Monica: Three?
Grace: I mean, four.
Monica: Four?
KC: OK. When she was a baby, we would poke a hole in it and squeeze it in her mouth, and then for a number of years she would chew them like Joshua did, and now how do you do it, Grace?
Grace: I drink it.
Monica: Go for it. Show us how. A lot of people say that they can’t get their kids to take fish oils or capsules, but these are actually gel caps which go down actually very easy. How was that, Grace?
Grace: Good. Took them all at once.
KC: All at once.
Monica: Good job.
KC: There you have it. A seven year old taking her fish oil. God bless you and have a great day.

Dear Living Fuel Family,
“It’s hard enough to get my kids to eat their broccoli or carrots, so how can I get them to take their fish oil capsules?” Many adults have similar issues.
As you may already know, studies abound about the wonderful health benefits of Omega-3 fish oil, and these
benefits also apply to our children! In our final LivingFuelTV episode in the Omega-3 series, we get practical with several tips
on how you can help your whole family, even your kids, add fish oil supplements to their daily routine.
Before we get started, you may be asking: How many fish oil capsules should kids take? We recommend
one soft gel capsule per twenty-five pounds of body weight (just be sure to check with your healthcare professional before
starting your kids on any nutritional supplement).
Start early.
Even newborns need their Omega-3 which they can get through breastfeeding with mom taking her fish oil.
After baby
is weaned, just squeeze a proportional amount, based on weight, of a soft gel capsule into their mouth each day
or every other day. If your kids are older, start today with the following tips.
Set the example.
As parents, kids will imitate what we DO much more than what we SAY. Make it a habit for the whole family
to take their fish oil together – perhaps at breakfast or dinner time. Just as we share with our kids the benefits of
brushing their teeth, share with them the benefits of taking fish oil and help them to understand what it’s doing
in their bodies, i.e. brain health, flow in their system, etc. As with any habit, once it’s established, your kids
will start to do it on their own.
Drink.
Use a pin or fork to puncture the soft gel capsule and squeeze the liquid into a spoon or right
into your child’s mouth. Start with a small amount and increase as they adjust to the taste. You’ll discover
that your kids will begin to really enjoy it! This is a great starting point and is recommended for kids
of all ages.
Chew.
Have your child chew the soft gel. The capsule will “pop” and the liquid will squirt into their mouth.
They can chew on the capsule for a while and swallow it or they may choose to spit out the empty capsule
(recommended for kids with adequate teeth to firmly chew up the capsule). The liquid should taste pleasant,
oily, and mildly fishy.
Swallow.
Living Fuel SuperEssentials Omega are encased in a buffalo gelatin soft gel capsules making them quite easy to swallow. Have your child put one capsule in their mouth, take a drink of water, “float” the capsule in their mouth and take a big swallow! Recommended for children at least four years of age.
Reward.
Encourage and reward your kids for taking their fish oil with a favorite treat, movie, or other
fun activity.
Watch.
Gather your kids around the computer and watch two of our children, then 3-year old Joshua
and 7-year old Grace, demonstrate how they take their fish oil. Click on the graphic below.
